Here are some resources to help you this month.

  1. U.S. History: African Americans
    American I Am: The African American Imprint 
    This project - a traveling exhibit and a Web site - was created to trace the imprint of African Americans on the history and development of the United States. It offers educators an historically relevant, culturally diverse curriculum that can be used as part of Black History Month observances. The Web site offers lesson plans, activity sheets, and other learning materials for grades 5-12 that can be used as a stand-alone history unit or linked to other curricula.

  2. Economics Education 
    Access, Analyze, Act: From Economic Theory to Financial Reality
    This Web site is designed to help students dive deeper into today’s economy and to see how it affects their lives. It includes case studies, lesson plans, media resources (including videos with young people talking about their experiences), glossary, and widgets. From PBS Teachers.

  3. Science
    Jungle Jack’s Animal Guide
    Interactive pages on animals from around the world -  their diets and other facts (from Jack Hanna and the Columbus Zoo) 

    Podcasts - short videos on rhinos, polar bears and climate change, frogs, and more.

  4. Science: Free Book
    Science Teaching As a Profession: Why It Isn't, How It Could Be 
    Download this book for free until the end of March 2010. The 142-page book by Sheila Tobias and Anne Baffert is available for sale (publication date is March 1, 2010) at the National Science Teachers Association Web site

  5. Technology: Search Tool
    SweetSearch
    SweetSearch is a free custom search engine for students that searches over 35,000 Web sites that have been evaluated and by the company's for their academic and journalistic rigor. Here are some examples of their search results:  ShakespeareWar of 1812Biographies (you can add category filters to modify this search).

    Congressional Moment Radio Series
    This Web area provides two-minute radio spots on specific ways in which the work of Congress has made a difference in people's lives - from food safety and health research to the interstate highway system. From Indiana University Radio and the Center on Congress. 

  7. Math: Interactive Activities
    Brainingcamp
    This Web site has a growing number of free middle school math animated lessons and interactive activities.

  8. Spelling/Vocabulary
    Spelling City
    Students can practice their spelling words at this Web site. Teachers can post lists for easy access. The site provides visual and auditory practice and games as well as testing options.

    “I use the testing option when students are absent on test day for a quick make-up. Print the worksheets for students to practice writing their weekly spelling list."

  9. Civics Education
    Youth Leadership Initiative 
    This Web site offers free access (with registration) to K-12 civic education designed to encourage student interest and participation in the American political process. Activities include: Internet mock election, E-Congress, teacher-developed lesson plans, a political campaign CD-ROM. Produced by a nonpartisan unit of the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

  10. Health & Well-Being
    20 Indoor Movement Activities
    Being involved in movement positively affects children both cognitively and physically. Here are 20 quick, easy, and engaging movement activities and games for the classroom.
